Made redundant

Hi, I was made redundant in September 2022.
I planned taking 3 months off work and then start looking for a new position in January.
Because I was paid redundancy pay I thought I would not be able to claim anything from the Government so did not inform HMRC.
It is now April 2023 and I still have not secured a new employment position.
Should I contact HMRC?

Being paid redundancy does NOT stop you from claiming JSA, I did that at age 57. HMRC should be aware you have no current employment, no reason you need to contact them until you start another job and for some reason they mess up the tex code.1

Fixed that for you.TadleyBaggie said:Being paid redundancy does NOT stop you from claiming JSA, I did that at age 57. HMRC should be aware you have no current employment, no reason you need to contact them until you start another job and for some reason they mess up the tex code.
OP, likewise, I did the same about 7 years ago after being made redundant from a very well paid job and with a chunky redundancy settlement - 'new style' JSA doesn't care about that, you just had to have paid enough NI contributions for the 2 previous years to qualify. If you had done so through your last job then nothing stopping you applying now (although you don't apply by contacting HMRC), good luck!3 -
Thanks, no idea why I didn't spot the error!1 -
Indeed but to do so you must be actively seeing work. The OP "planned taking 3 months off" so couldn't legally have claimed JSA for those months. After that, if they were doing what the DWP would consider as actively looking for work, then they could claim but that would include almost any job, not just the type of work they wanted.TadleyBaggie said:Being paid redundancy does NOT stop you from claiming JSA, I did that at age 57. Yep, and that's why I'm not intending to claim again when I get my next redundancy in a month or so - I'm in no rush to look for work!Undervalued said:

But on the 'any job' point, I thought there was at least an informal allowance for the first 3 months of claiming that you could stick to searching within your own industry/field of expertise?0 -

No, there isn't. It's only New style JSA or Universal Credit, which is means tested. For both benefits you need to be looking for work.

As at Oct 2022, the Permitted Period was still an option within the Claimant Commitment - I used it to specify type of roles I would apply for and minimum salary. I had to be pretty pro-active to get it though, my work coach would have just skimmed over that section if I hadn't pulled her up on itpoppy12345 said:artyboy said:

I had claimed JSA for 1 month after finishing with a company. I'd paid enough NI contributions over the last 2 years,
When I made the application the default distance for time to travel to work was 90mins each way. Either sign up or your dont get JSA -some choice0
