The new Apple Silicon Macs are brilliant but to be honest it sounds like an iPad would suit you better.

A new Macbook will probably last 8+ years. During that time it'll get a new operating system (if you choose to download it) every year and multiple security updates. You won't need to waste money on antivirus unless you're in the habit of using some of the more dodgy parts of the Internet.
    So, do the maths.
[Full disclosure - I worked in IT support for a number of years and would never use a Windows machine from choice.]
My current macbook is 11 years old. It's running the second--last version of system 10 (10.14) so I can keep running useful old software.
Can run video calling software, browsers, productivity software as old as Office 2011,
Still plays DVDs and CDs, but also streams music & movies/TV smoothly. Never had security issues.
Fully intend to get as many more years of use as far as I possibly can.
Not sure I need a computer to do more than that, as I don't do gaming.
I've kind of stepped off the continuous "upgrade" conveyor belt, and I know there's at least a hypothetical risk my computer isn't totally secure.
Mind you if you want a Windows machine you'd better keep updating for security purposes.

  • I paid £300 for a renewed MacBook Air from Amazon. 2017 model with 256gb ssd, 8gb ram i7. An excellent machine that should last me a good few years. Better than any new laptop or Chromebook at similar money.

I have a Macbook pro from 2015 - working just fine - managing everything I need from it. I bought it as a refurb direct from Apple, and was lucky to qualify for a staff discount - so at the time it cost about £700 instead of £1300. After 8 years it's still running the latest software, the battery still lasts a good while (although it does highlight a service is required - but I ignore it and it's fine) and don't intend on changing it anytime soon. Generally Macbooks seem to last a lot longer than their equivalent chromebooks and regular pc laptops - so it depends on where durability and lastability fall in your list of requirements. If you were buying new - look at the apple refurb section directly on the apple website - there can be some good deals on there sometimes.
