As for unable to look out with obscure windows, I thought I’ll just open the window to look out.
I think there is a world of difference between lifting a blind to look out and having to open a window.  If there was someone in my front garden and I wasn't sure what they were up to, lifting a blind is far quicker, safer and less obvious than opening a window which still might not give you a view of the bit you want to check out.  Doesn't let the rain or cold air in either.  Living behind obscure glass would make me feel very insecure, odd as that sounds.

My son's room at uni was ground floor front and we got voile curtains from Ikea and pressure-fit rods.  The landlord was very impressed!  But that was a tall Victorian living room bay, not sure how long a pressure-fit would go to.
  • The window company that came to measure and quote yesterday also recommended stick on films over obscure glass or mirror glass for the living room. The reverse problem at night with mirror glass (as some have already mentioned) just seems to be a horror for residential properties 😂

I would have thought that having permanent obscured glass would affect the value of the house by at least the cost of getting the windows replaced.   I say "at least" as it might put some potential buyers off the house completely.

I wouldn’t have thought so until seeing everyone’s reaction here (& the reluctance shown by window companies). Well, glad I asked 😂

What about something like this? You would be able to vary the height.
Perfect Fit Blackout Grey Linen Bottom Up Blind (orderblinds.co.uk)
Or a standard roller blind upside down with hooks at the side to hold it.
