Is it possible to connect two SSD to same Sata port on motherboard.

Hi folks,

I am buying a 2tb Samsung EVO 270 (I have an existing 850 500gb) and wondering if its possible to connect them to same Sata port on motherboard, as I have no free ports on motherboard due to being filled with other hard drives and cd-rom that I want to keep.

If so do I need to get some sort of SATA port adapter?

Thanks a lot for any advice.

You can use something called a SATA port multiplier, these are about £20 and might not work as the motherboard needs to support them. Also they will slow down the transfer if both discs are in use as they have to split one channel.

Otherwise you want a pci-express SATA card. These are also around £20 and although they claim to be 6Gb/s they usually go at 3Gb/s.  So what you do is use the fast channels on the motherboard for SSDs and put the CD rom on the slow card.

You didn't say what motherboard you have, but some of the HP & DELL ones have different speed SATA ports in different colours. Make sure the SSDs go to the fastest ones.

You also probably want one of those dodgy incendive power splitters, I've no idea why they burst into flames but people always warn that they do.

An alternative is to buy an external caddy for the 500GB and connect it via USB3.

Thanks, will see how it goes when I get the SSD, I also bought this as it says I can mount two SSD's in it,

Sabrent 3.5-Inch to x2 SSD / 2.5-Inch Internal Hard Drive Mounting Kit [SATA and Power Cables included] (BK-HDCC) : Amazon.co.uk: Computers & Accessories

At the moment I just have the existing SSD sitting in a 3.5 bay though wedged in with some of the loose power supply cables.

Its an old 13 year computer though going good at the moment, I think the motherboard is an ASUS M4A785TD-EVO. It does have an external eSATA port on the backplate, which I have connected to one of the internal Cd-rom drives I have.

I could try running that cable to the old 500 GN SSD instead.

I think I have plenty power connectors on the power supply.

Tempted to go with one of the cards if the above doesn't work.

    Thanks again.

According to t'interweb, the ASUS M4A785TD-EVO has 5   3Gb/s SATA II ports on board, plus the eSATA which is also 3Gb/s.

This is approx 300MB/s, and the 870EVO is good for over 500MB/s, so you won't see full performance like you should on a 6Gb/s port (SATA III).

In reality you won't notice, if you are moving files to or from hard discs you won't get more than 60 odd MB/s out of them once the buffer fills up.

It might be worth getting a SATA III card and putting the SSD on it, but sometimes you can't boot off the discs on the card.

Be careful using cheap power cables. Quite easy to short connectors on 2.5 disks...

  • Well got the 2tb Samsung 870 installed bought from Amazon, just going to use the old one as a standby backup, a bit annoyed though as I payed Amazon £129 which I thought was a good price, I see it now on sale at Currys for £99.99.
  • I always ask this when somebody I know buys extra hard drive storage because they rarely budget for it…..

Where will you back up your 2TB of data on your new drive?
