Hi.
Planning to visit CostCo this weekend for the first time.
What are the best things to buy there to save money on (versus a supermarket / B&M etc)?
What do you think are great deals there on household shopping?

You can’t compare Costco with B&M on any level. The diced Aberdeen Angus beef is excellent quality and around £13 per kilo the trays of sweet bakery products are worth checking out too.The basics like aluminium foil washing liquid etc is also excellent quality but I wouldn’t call it cheap it’s just good value for money.

I found that by the time you add vat to the displayed prices, there’s not a lot thats worth it to be honest but I guess it all depends on what you buy.

Loo rolls can work out cheaper if you have the storage .

it’s basically high lay out to save pennies but that’s only my opinion x

It’s not really about saving it’s about the quality at Costco.

    I agree with @sarah1972.

For branded stuff you are better off waiting until one of the big supermarkets has it on offer and then stocking up - Costco prices sit somewhere between normal supermarket price and special offer price.

Lots of people rave about Costco quality but IMO it's not amazing - meat and fish are comparable with supermarket premium ranges (rather than standard own label) but the prices are also comparable.  Fruit & veg is not great and most households wouldn't get through it fast enough.
  • Fresh fruit can be cheaper than supermarkets but probably still costs more than local grocer or market.
We eat plenty of soft fruits, so it works well for us.

We stock up on fresh juice (check the dates), cheese, bacon, frozen chips, baked beans, tinned tomatoes, jam, cereals, bottled water plus a few other bits as/when they come on offer.
Coffee, tea, hot chocolate powder, pesto, 'old el paso' products are all well priced and things that we occasionally pick up.

Fuel is typically 10-15p per litre cheaper and this alone makes the journey worth while, everything else is just a bonus.

We always get the toilet roll and kitchen towel - not the cheapest but good value and very soft / absorbent
  • For me it’s bulk buy items such as:
    loo roll (mentioned above).
Pot noodles (12 cases are the best price I’ve found).
12 case of tinned tomatoes are cheaper than most super market alternatives.
packs of Pepsi or Coke 2l bottles work out cheaper then any shop you just need to space to store them.
so, so, so many other things are far more expensive than like for like at supermarkets!
  • I’ve found almost nothing is cheaper than Lidl/Aldi/B&M unless they have a specific special deal on, though the quality can be a little better (Toilet rolls, kitchen rolls, silver foil etc but you have to buy bulk) Petrol is only 4p a litre cheaper than local supermarkets in Edinburgh but still makes it just about worth the trip if you live close by.

Overall, doesn't really sound great to go to Cost\Co - feel like I've wasted the membership fee already!
