Annual travel insurance policy ends before cruise that's booked

Options
I've sent a query to the company but the auto reply says it may be 5 days before they reply.....so I'll ask here.

I got an annual policy to ensure we were covered for a recent holiday.  It was about £20 more to get an annual policy as opposed to just for that holiday we were taking last month.

OH has booked us on a cruise for next year but there's 2 problems:
  1. The cruise actually happens after the annual policy ends.  I suppose that's fine if something happens in the next few months to prevent us being able to go but doesn't actually cover the cruise.  I suspect the renewal will have a significant price hike no matter what.
  2. The annual policy doesn't actually cover cruises.  I hadn't realised that when I took it out and it didn't matter as we didn't seem likely to take one.
So will the policy cover for cancelling the cruise despite cruises not being included on the document?  It would just be a holiday cancellation rather than something expensive like repatriation from a boat or diverting it or whatever.

Just got the cruise documents through and they state we can add cover to that but it must be done in the next week or so - which is difficult if it takes 5 days for the insurance company to get back to me.

Oh and a third problem.....we have travel insurance via our packaged bank account, plus this new annual policy to cover medical conditions that the bank policy wouldn't cover, and now potentially we'll have a 3rd policy for the cruise itself.  Am I right in thinking we might end up having to cover 3 deductibles even for a policy that will no longer cover the OH??

Phone the current insurer to see if they do an addon for cruises.  If so, take that and renew when it becomes due.  That would certainly be the cheapest option.  As things stand the current policy may not cover you if you have to cancel the cruise during the life of the current policy.
If a policy through the cruise company must be taken in the 'next week or so' you have time to try the above first.
If you have multiple policies covering the same risk you are correct in thinking that each policy will only pay part of the claim but each will deduct the excess before paying out.

I got caught out by this. I strongly recommend getting a specific policy for the cruise and not bothering renewing the annual policy until the next holiday is booked and is within the year.

Policy renewal for me in December, wouldn't renew as I'd got cancer, wouldn't pay out as the trip wasn't until the July.   I managed to get a bespoke policy two weeks before travelling.  If I'd just got a policy for that holiday I'd have been ok.
