in Cutting tax
HI,
Wondering if any one can give me some information on why, after I cancelled the Marriage Allowance on Govt HMRC site this was done on the 5th April 23, as my pension I get is now well above the £12,570, so I dont quialfy for it to be moved to my wife.
It states the following
Your Marriage Allowance claim has ended.
You will keep the tax-free allowances transferred by you until 5 April 2024.
On the HMRC is showing the tax code for 23-24 as S1131N for myself, and for my wife S1383M, these should have been changed to the standed S1257L.

There are two things here.
1. Unless you are going to become a higher rate payer you will still be eligible. Although there may be no financial benefit (as a couple) from leaving it in place.
2. Assuming you would prefer to have your full Personal Allowance then you are correct that this should apply for the current tax year if you cancelled it in what is now the previous tax year.
I think you'll have to phone HMRC to check why this hasn't happened automatically.
8am sharp is apparently the best time to phone.1 -
Thanks for the info. I am self assessment so I check the Gov Web site most days and as you said it should have changed.I asked the question just in case anyone else was in the same boat.I will be on the phone at 08:00hrs sharp.0
