How much money to take

Hi all
.

I am going to Rhodes in a few weeks all inclusive ar the hotel. I think I need to pay a tax when I get to hotel.

We are taking my Barclaycard with us to cover if we have a meal out or book excursion as when we went to Bulgaria we needed card to pay for excursion.

We are going to take euros with us so wondering how much to take for two people who will be going out to visit the old town and other places a couple days at the hotel too.

I know the rate will be different to bulgarian lev which was 2.23 to the pound. Euro not as good.

Thank you

Depending on your hotel the tourist tax can be up to 4 euro per room per night. Some hotels are cheaper.
Last year in Rhodes (7 day break) we took 200 euro for the week and I came back with over 100 Euro cash and just over £100 on my credit card.
We didn't do any tours but did take the local bus down to Lindos one day and into Rhodes on another night.

Take a small amount of cash and put the rest on card, pay in Euros on the card, not convert it at point of transaction.

You don't need to "take" any money. They have ATMs, you can pay by card for a lot of stuff. We travel abroad several times a year and never even think about taking money.
Which Barclaycard is it? The new Rewards card has no fees or interest on ATM withdrawals (if you always pay in full). But even a card that charges is likely to be better value than buying Euros in the UK.

I haven't changed money in advance of a foreign trip in around 10 years. All I take is whatever I have left over from previous trips then, if necessary, use an ATM on landing.

Depending on where you are going. as some are more cashless than others, it is possible to get away without any cash at all. I was in Lisbon recently and used less than €20 in cash in 4 days. Everything else went on a card. Holiday resorts on the Spanish Costas and islands tend to be more cash dominated - presumably for "tax efficiency" reasons. Germany surprisingly still has a cash culture whereas in Scandinavia they will looks at look for being strange if you try to pay in cash - and many places will be card only.

I think Germany has changed a lot after Covid.  A few years ago cards were rarely accepted and you needed a walletful of Euros.  On a recent trip I found that card payments were possible almost everywhere.

That's good to know. haven't been to Germany since COVID but my last trip there was in March 2020 (just before the first lockdown) and it was still surprising how many places where cash only and ATMs where very hit and miss accepting foreign cards. I was in Hamburg and had to try 4-5 cash machines before I found one which would accept my card.

I cannot remember where we were in Europe but I asked a waiter about being tipped on the card machine and he said that the money goes into the owners coffers - they don't get it.  I realise that this is not the norm.  but since then, I've always taken some 5/10 Euro notes for tips and used ATMs when running out.

I've got 200Euro for a trip to France next week.  It would be great if that's all we spend.  :D

On my last trip to the Canaries, I took a five euro note with me (it was lying around in a draw it home). It was still in my wallet when I got home one week later. I didn't even need to use an ATM. Everything was paid for via card (mostly Revolut so I didn't get fleeced on exchange rates).

One thing I did make sure of is that I had a second card kept in the safe just in case.

This would appear to be the third variation of the same question in separate threads - is this really necessary ?

What do you mean by 'this' question - are you referring to OP's question, which was asked two weeks ago?  If so, which thread are you suggesting they should have used at the time?
