Which oven to use?

  • Might not make a huge difference, but if you’re regularly cooking breakfast in the oven each day there may be a small saving to be made by turning it off a little bit before the end of cooking (or setting the temperature down low to keep the fan running).

So if you’re cooking for 30 min, the idea would be to stop heating at around the 20 minute mark. The temperature inside the oven should remain plenty hot enough in that time to finish the cooking, but the oven won’t be putting any additional energy in at the end of your cooking time that would just be wasted as it cools down.

Realistically the actual costs savings would be minimal (maybe a few pennies a day) as most ovens won’t be using a whole lot of energy once everything is up to temperature anyway, but however small, it is still something that would improve cost efficiency without any additional expense of buying a new appliance.

Air fryers can be great if you’d get a good amount of use out of them but otherwise wouldn’t be worthwhile if you’re already happy with your current appliances for cooking whatever you might put in one. Personally I’d take a decent combi microwave over an air fryer any day (especially if counter space is limited), but that comes down entirely to my own preference and the food I tend to cook.

As an update my electric use was much reduced this month.

The previous month I had my eldest home for 2 weeks so the computer usage had been much increased, but coupled with no baked oats this month I saved just over 100kwh. I'm assuming most of this due to the PC. But back to our average of 230kwh per month.
