Phone going mysteriously into silent mode

I'm fairly new with smart phones and have yet to figure out how it is that my Android (Oppo) phone seems to be going unbidden into silent mode at odd times.
When I check 'sound and vibration' in settings, it often seems to have done this - without my conscious triggering of it. There must be some way I'm doing this outside of the settings menu without realising it.
Anyone enlighten me as to what's going on?

Do you have a 'do not disturb' schedule set ?1

The buttons on the left of the phone are volume keys.
If pressed it will change to silent. Really easy to do when just holding your phone/using it. I accidentally touch them allt he time when typing as I hold the phone in the same place the buttons are2 -
Ah - Its not just me then !
Oppo user here too - an Oppo A72
I often find its gone in to Silent mode without my knowledge
By default the Up/Down on side controls the media volume
If you press up/down you get a single volume control shown, with 2 dots below to allow the other volume control to be shown
When I find its gone in to Silent mode - The middle 2 volumes - ringtone and notification are both at zero
Just holding down the Down button only reduces the Media volume not the ringtone volume - so unlikely to be a pocket activation thing

Ah I didn't realise it was just media. Though having just looked I now realise this is the case🤦🏻♀️bob_a_builder said:Ah - Its not just me then !

Yes but, excuse me if I'm dense... even if the side button DID set ringtone volume, the lowest setting should not qualify as 'silent mode', should it?0

You can change side volume buttons to control Ringtone if you prefer - In Settings | Sound & Vibration | Volume button
And if you change it to control Ringtone ...
Then YES - it does set it to Silent mode at the very bottom setting Ringtone AND Notification volumes will be set to zero - not sure about vibration ?0
