Expired driving license
So yesterday I realised that my driving license expired almost two months ago. This was entirely my fault for not having checked it properly, mainly because I was under the impression that, when I renewed it 5 years ago because I moved to a different address, it would automatically renew for 10 years. Also, I never received any reminder from the DVLA but again, I can only blame myself for not having checked.
Having said that, I've had to cancel my car rental in Italy and I will be a passenger for a week or so.
I am trying to renew it today at a Post Office (I don't have a UK passport). My question is: does section 88 apply to me, after I send the request today, even though the license has already expired? I tick all the other boxes in terms of age, medical conditions, etc.
Obviously I am referring to the UK here, I know that I can't rely on section 88 abroad.

Assuming you're under 70, section 88 of the Road Traffic Act 1988 is irrelevant.
Your photocard may have expired, but your entitlement to drive has not. That continues until your 70th birthday [section 99(1) of the same Act] unless it's revoked or you're disqualified.
However, an Italian hire company or policeman won't know that.0
