Scanning Software needed

Used to run Acrobat Writer 8 under Windows 7 and it met my needs of scanning to PDF (I might update the file several times throughout the year) and also merging PDFs (like 12 monthly statements into one annual PDF).

I now run Windows 11 and no longer have access to the Writer 8 serial No.

I want to be able to scan to PDF and merge PDFs and don't want an annual software subscription.

Recommendations for PDF software please

My scanner comes with software to scan to a pdf (one pdf per scanned page) and merged pdf (one pdf for whole scanned document).

Does your scanner have something similar?

Googling 'merge pdf' will give many many solutions

If you need something beyond what the free services do then Tracker Software's pdf xchange editor has a one off purchase option that's pretty cheap, and there's a free trial so you can test it out.

  • Make of scanner? HP Smart (Windows 11 & App) works fine with my All-in-one.

You can "almost" do what you need just using the built-in Windows software. It's easier if you're willing to work with TIF files rather than PDF. But maybe this is good enough?
    • Use Windows Fax & Scan tool to scan multiple pages to a multipage TIF file (if you have a document feeder allowing you to scan multiple pages at once)
    • You can then print the multi-page TIF file, selecting the Microsoft Print to PDF printer, to convert it to a PDF
    • If you don't have a document feeder, scan individual pages as TIF or JPG, open the folder where they are saved (Scanned Documents) in Windows Explorer, select multiple files, right-click and select Print, then select the Microsoft Print to PDF printer. This does indeed allow you to concatenate multiple files to a single multi-page PDF
    • You can't combine existing PDFs into a multi-page PDF using this method. You can combine multiple TIFs though, including multipage TIFs, into a multi-page PDF

I think I used vuescan when my operating system got cleverer than my scanner.
Scanners tend not to be supported for very long after the sale (no new drivers) but so far vuescan has been just as good as the original software.

Of course, I can't guarantee that your system will work but it's donationware - if it doesn't work you don't feel any obligation to pay.
