Is it illegal for British Gas to use a false meter reading?

Because it is a separate issue to my previous question about British Gas.TheMilkmansDad said:If this is a continuation of a previous post then why start a new thread?
More information given means you are more likely to get more rounded responses. Providing information b drip feeding generally leads to a negative outcome borne by frustration for all parties.0 -
No, login onto your account and submit reading.0

In that case why are you now talking about a DD when your initial issue on this thread was regarding meter reads? Maybe I've missed something - if so apologies.wasty said:

My original thread was about me wanting to complain about DD, to which I have had no reply from British Gas. This thread is about an additional complaint about the false meter reading and is a newer issue.TheMilkmansDad said:

We need to know the context. Is it an error? Is it an estimate? is it a bad attempt at fraud (which is illogical seeing as the next meter reading would correct it and nobody benefits)?wasty said:
So why did you waste your time replying, I purposely added that so that people would not waste their time?dunstonh said:British Gas used a false meter reading, ie one they they had invented, normally if they didn’t actually read the meter then they say that it is estimated or that I had provided one, but this time they said “meter reading”, is that illegal. What law do you think they have broken? Please don’t ask for further details as I will not give them, I just would like to know the answer to my question.Stop wasting our time then.
Hence needing to the background is important.

Surely the answer here is -wasty said:British Gas used a false meter reading, ie one they they had invented, normally if they didn’t actually read the meter then they say that it is estimated or that I had provided one, but this time they said “meter reading”, is that illegal. I found out when I read my meter 2 weeks later, that the reading was actually less than their “meter reading”.

No, and please don't ask for further details because you won't get any.

It is not false reading - it is estimate. If you are poor at providing meter readings then the supplier’s estimate may be somewhat out from what is showing on your meter. Provide the supplier with a meter reading and, in return, it will reverse the estimated charges, and it will provide you with an accurate bill that shows an accurate credit/debit balance.wasty said:

As I said in another reply, it was not an estimate as British Gas say when the reading is an estimate, and as I said they described it as a meter reading.
I regularly supply meter readings particularly since the gas costs have increased dramatically, and it has been over a month since I informed them of the false reading with the correct meter reading, but they have not replied.0 -
As I said in my first post at the start of the thread, it is NOT an estimate, and see my reply timed at 2.33 today.dunstonh said:

After 8 weeks without a reply you should raise your complaint if you fell you have a valid one with the ombudsman service you don't need to wait any longer.wasty said:
