Yep, not the operator's responsibility to know the ins and outs of your travel documentation, traveller's responsibility to have valid documents. This kind of thing is just another Brexit benefit (TM) folks.
  • In my view Tour operators who have knowledge or have experience about things that can seriously affect their clients position which is not shown or properly highlighted in their documentation or during the booking process should owe from then on a “duty of care” to those clients. Particularly when Operators should have a simple remedy or customer focussed quality system and processes such as asking for passport start date to stop such injuries occurring particularly related to EU Cruises or tours. Hopefully a judge will come to that conclusion similar to consumer cases the late Lord Denning presided over.

There are 195 countries in the world, the number of different passports in the world is a much higher number. The UK alone has British Citizen, British Subject, British Protected Person, British Official and British Diplomat (and that's before we consider the complication of overseas territories, protectorates etc)

Then we have to consider multi-national persons... I have 2 passports but eligible for 3. Entry and exit rules may be different.. in theory the Mrs can enter her home country on her British Citizen passport but can only exit using her other passport. Rules can also vary depending on where you have been before, in principle no one but their citizens can enter certain Middle Eastern countries with an Israel stamp in their passport, similarly you cannot enter the US with certain other stamps (most recent issues have been Cuba)

It is unrealistic to say travel agents or tour operators should give perfect immigration advice to all. The issue of giving incomplete advice is you help 75% and really screw over the remaining 25%. Telling everyone they need to make their own enquiries is the fairest path forward.

There are companies that will advise on your exact circumstances but due to the complexity of it all, their fees can be more than some holidays.

Or customers wishing to travel to foreign countries could make basic checks online at the gov.uk website to see what the entry requirements are to where they are going. Especially since they can change at any time.

What an awful situation for you. Unfortunately it seems so many people still aren't aware of this, despite it being talked about lots on the forum. On our ski holiday this january 2 seperate people were offloaded from the plane on the tarmac with the same issue. They'd made it all the way to their seats to be turfed off.

Is there any chance of you getting an emergency in person appointment for a new passport, and catching up with the cruise by plane?
I am curious as to how those 2 people made it onto the plane. I have just travelled and my passport was inspected at luggage check in and as I went through security. Also at the airport gate.
