It would need battens fitted to the lower brickwork first in order to bring it out flush with the corbels, but as FB says a few dabs of adhesive should make them easy enough to remove in future, tho' I doubt you'd ever want to. Could then be painted a contrasting colour to the wall, and give a nice cosy country-cottage look and feel. It won't 'need' a skirting board along the bottom, tho' it'll add more to the 'indoor' room feel if one is fitted. A thin beading would do instead - just to neatly finish where the board meets the floor.
That door should be paintable with no issues at all, and - once done - shouldn't need redoing again unless you actually damage it. Lots of suitable paints for this, from Zinsser AllCoat (in satin, I'd suggest) to some specifically 'designed' for this. All should adhere with no issues provided the surface is cleaned well, and be very durable. If the 'wrap' has a textured woodgrain in it, all the better - it should show through.
If you are not up for boarding this yourself, a handyperson should easily tackle it in a day.
This should all be quite transformative. Good chance it'll make the glass panel more acceptable to you too - I don't think it's at all unattractive, but it's not helped by the somewhat unconvincing 'wood' colour of the door. You should have fun looking at door and panelling colour combos that will give you the feel you are after.1
