    Why the hurry? I would tell her Thanks very much for the kind thought, but you'd prefer to wait until the time comes. That way, if she needs the money she's got it - and if she doesn't, you still get it in the end.

    There are no 7 year caveats on an estate well below the NRB, and even for estates in IHT territory gifts have no negative consequences to the estate or the receiver of the gift.

    Hi so if anything was to happen to her within 7 years then i would have to pay tax on £34,000 on a sliding scale if her total estate came to over £325,000 (which it wont come anywhere near that) 
    No, if it was the case that IHT was due it would come out of the residual estate not from the person who received the gift unless we are talking about gifts in excess of the NRB.
