First time renter - Flight path troubles

  • The best thing is to communicate with the agents. They may well be able to market the property during the next 5 months before your break clause is executable. You stay there until another tenant is found.

Do you know how long it was on the market before you took it on from the last tenant?

Earplugs could be your friend but not all get on with them?
If you're willing to cover the costs of course.... The landlord/agent won't.    Unfortunately you will likely have to ride the 6 months out

As a landlord - If a new tenant had issues we would and have worked with them regardless of the contract. Once a new tenant is found the existing tenant only pays up to that point.

That's why I suggested having a word with the agents as to what they might be able to do.

Or are you suggesting they should not bother approaching with this idea because in your opinion there is no possibility they will not help the tenant out?

I read TopGear fan as saying the LL may help, but won’t want to be out of pocket.

No reliance should be placed on the above! Absolutely none, do you hear?

Hi all - thank you for the responses. I have approached the agent but I think the landlord has had enough for people coming and going. Will give it a month and hopefully get used to it. Looking at some foam padding or similar for the door (it is unused) so hoping a temporary solution will also help.

How about a good thick door curtain? They are surprisingly effective at blocking noise and you can hang it from an expanding shower pole, so no need for any drilling or damage to the property.

How do you get on with white noise? There are lots of several hour videos on YouTube. I play rain noise if I need it. Having white noise playing right by your head deadens and minimises the intermittent nature of other noise like planes etc. However, you may get used to the noise. We used to live next to a hospital and so would frequently have sirens going off from ambulances, it was only during Covid and work from home that I realised how immune I'd become to them as colleagues would comment on them in the background whereas I hadn't even registered them.

Thanks all. Tried the white noise machine but the plane volume far outweighs even the maximum setting. Will try ear plugs tonight and give it a few weeks in the hope I get more used to it !

A white noise machine that was the same volume as planes flying overhead would be a techno mix. I would still leave it on for the next few nights, with or without earplugs, because constant background noise + planes should be less jarring to the senses than silence interrupted by planes. There won't be any instant fixes, just things that make the process of acclimatising to the noise a bit easier and the first nights less annoying.

Mr Wadd lived at the end of a runway when we first met; across the road was the chain-link fence of the airport.  I was horrified by the noise at first but did begin to notice it less fairly quickly even without earplugs.  Later, when I worked night shifts, I adjusted to wearing ear plugs to sleep during the day.
Just try a few different types and don't bulk buy until you're sure which ones suit you.  Size is also an issue to get the right fit.  I like Pluggerz because they allow me to hear some noise but I still have to move to the spare room if I can still hear Mr Wadd's snoring.  I didn't get on with the mouldable silicone lumps.  Ear plugs are a cheaper alternative to trying to end the tenancy early.
