Can an autorenewal happen with notifying in advance that it will take place

I was recently surprise when an on-line service autorenewed without letting me know that this was about to take place
Had I known I would have cancelled the autorenew
It it even permitted they can autorenew without notifying me in advance ?
I would have thought that was the minimum requirement

For certain industries, like Insurance, they are legally obligated to inform you. For the majority there is no legal requirement and so it simply comes down to what their T&Cs said would happen.

No minimum requirement for ordinary commercial contracts.
My Netflix autorenews every month without notifying me. So do some other subscriptions.

UK Government recommends that customers are sent a reminder a reasonable time before it is due to be renewed, and says it might be an unfair term otherwise.

Some services, such as broadband, mobile contracts and insurance are heavily regulated and must follow their regulator's rules about renewal.

Generally your "notification" is you signing up to it in the first place. Put it in the calendar yourself if you think you might forget.

You would have been 'notified' at the time you signed up for an auto-renewing contract that it auto-renewed. The specifics of what reminders they need to send you vary, also I find some companies are good enough that if you inform them it was a mistake they will cancel and refund. Others, not so much.

Hi, I've never had a problem with getting a refund when an auto renewal has gone through without me being aware or alert.

As long as you phone them soon after you notice, they should be amenable.

Just my own experience of course but I do appreciate a reminder if they're going to take my money and in this instance you didn't receive one.
