HMRC CF83 form

I’m filling in this form as i worked for a short time when living overseas but I m confused as how to fill it in. Its just the section 3 on employment that im unsure of. I worked in the Uk upto leaving the country so i ticked A employed and went to question 14/15 as advised. I then filled in 14/15

so my question is. Is that it for the whole of section 3? How do they know where and for how long  i worked abroad. Theres no info in he guidance notes to explain. Could anyone advise. Thanks

You put how long you worked overseas in section 4 - on a separate sheet of paper if necessary, as the guidance in leaflet NI38 says.
  • I'm struggling with the same form. I lived outside the UK for close to 30 years but came back around two years ago. The whole of Section 4 has "are or will" questions. Do I just leave them blank and write a work history for when I was abroad on an extra sheet? Also, in Section 3, how can I find out the exact date for when I last paid National Insurance contributions (it was some time in early 1992)?

Just put an extra sheet for your work history. As for the last date of your contributions, do you remember what the usual pay day was? Then it will have been on your last pay day while in the UK. If you don't remember then I guess you'll probably alright putting the last day you worked in the UK.

I just put the first of the month of my last payslip. I do find the form confusing aswell. Glad its not just me. I not expecting to get anything but its worth a try.

thanks for the other advice. Although im not sure how HMRC will work things out as the company i worked for overseas went under after covid and i only worked seasonal contracts
  • I’m about to complete this form too and wondered if there is a way this form can be submitted electronically rather than snail mail to the UK?

Not that I'm aware of. If you've got a government gateway account you can track it once it's arrived though.

No. HMRC is useless about online interactions compared to France where I now live. Just by way of comparison as I have started drawing a new pension in the UK that is taxed in France I needed to get an updated copy of Form France Individual signed & stamped by the French tax authorities to confirm that this pension will be taxed in France soan NT tax code will be applied by the UK. I logged on to my online French tax account last Sunday evening & used the secure message option to submit the completed form. By 11:00 Monday morning (the next day!) I had a reply from my local tax office (unlike the UK we still have local tax offices) with the signed & stamped form. I then posted this off to HMRC by snail mail who on past experience will take 9-12 months to get round to actioning it.

A few years back when I needed to purchase some added years of Class 2 National Insurance contributions I queried how I was supposed to complete form CF83 as it is obviously intended for you to fill in & set up a direct debit at the time that you move abroad. It seems that is the only form they have. I was advised to fill it in as best I could & enclose a covering letter.
