Currys Trade In

Hello,
Recently I purchased a new phone from Currys and took advantage of their trade in deal. They offered me £246 for my Samsung S10+. When I sent it, it was in perfect working order. They wrote back to me today, claiming that the phone has screen burn and have reviewed their offer to £50. I certainly had not noticed any screen burn and had been using the phone right up till the day I sent it off.
I feel like Currys are pulling a fast one and have written back requesting evidence.
Has anyone had a similar experience or can advise?
Thank you.

I would check to see if anywhere is offering more for the phone and, if so, get it back and sell it elsewhere.

You could get it back and try and sell it elsewhere, as TELLIT01 suggests.  Before doing that, check the terms of your contract.  Did the trade-in form part of the new phone deal?  If so, with such a variation in price, is there a case here for unwinding the whole deal (or at least threatening to)?  I suspect the terms of the trade-in are that the initial valuation is a guide only, and that final value can only be ascertained upon inspection, but with a drop of c.80% in value it might be arguable that it's unreasonable.  Threatening to unwind the whole deal and go elsewhere might elicit a better offer?
  • Thank you, both, for your input. I've emailed Currys with screenshot images from my old phone (inadvertently but fortuitously taken and saved in the cloid) to show there was no evidence of screen burn. I'm not going down without a fight!

Are you sure you know what a screenshot is?

I'm dubious about 'screen burn' too, having had my fingers burnt by it in the past.  Similar case, albeit in a mobile phone shop: a handset in immaculate condition was assessed by the saleswoman and pronounced 'excellent'; a part exchange price for a new mobile was agreed and then the old one was handed to the bearded vapist 'technical expert' in the corner who immediately diagnosed screen burn and substantially reduced the offer.

What screen burn?  Screen burn hitherto invisible to both saleswoman and myself, as it happened.  I protested.  Tech man disagreed.  On and on we went until eventually a part exchange price was agreed and the purchase of the new handset continued.  I have been dubious about 'screen burn' ever since: not in the sense of disputing that it is possible for a mobile telephone display to degrade, but in respect of said devices' alarming propensity to do so when in the hands of part-exchange assessors.

Is this any help?  No.  As others have suggested, the best thing to do is threaten to unwind the deal...
  • Hi. I know it is old discussion but may I ask how this ended?

I have similar situation, which I had offered £150 for my phone. I have sent it and after they reviewed it, they told me the is BLACK DOT ON THE SCREEN (I never seen any dot and phone was fully working) and it means non-working phone and offered £50. Did not agreed for that offer and asked for my device to be send back to me. Received email that said they will send it back, yet few hour later I had another email "thanking me for trade in my device with Currys" and £50 in my bank account. I cannot contact them by phone, and haven't had and reply yet.

The original poster was last on the site April 2023, so very unlikely to find out how it all resolved.
