Sounds like you are in a good financial position. Happy New Year.

Glad you've both recovered well from surgery too.

Oooh I’m in a pretty similar financial position.
Mortgage is approx £168,389 - but that’s the start of December figure. So will be £167 something now.

    Savings are similar too.

I’ll be aiming for a similar amount in savings but much less in terms of OPs in the mortgage. I’m aiming for about 1K.

I dream of a massive OP though.
Ooooooh. Do you have a diary?  Would be great to have a buddy in a similar position so we can cheer each other on!

Yes I have a diary - I started my second one just over a year ago when I remortgaged. My diary is a bit - whatever’s entered my head now/vomit on a page.

I use it sometimes for keeping me focused and on task as well as opposed to directly about the mortgage. I find just by posting my random thoughts/missions I learn from others. Although I’ve been really lacking in effort and motivation the last 12 months. I’m trying to make a concerted effort to sort myself out again now though.
Reduction in daily mortgage interest since October 23 (new mortgage) - £2.36 July 25

    Happy New Year everyone!!!

First day back at work yesterday so I went into the office. I decided I was going in over the Christmas break as I decided I 100% needed an Apple Watch so was planning on going to the Apple shop in my lunch break.
By the time I got there I had 99% decided I didn’t need one as I have a perfectly good watch and a phone!!!  A total win there as that’s £449 I haven’t spent. I think ultimately it was FOMO telling me I needed one.

So I got to the office, I didn’t need to go the the Apple Store anymore, was the only person in, the office was freezing, and the milk was off. So I was gone by 10.30
and worked the rest of the day at home.

Plus side is I had a rather delicious bacon butty, downside is that It cost me £4 I needn’t have spent. But £4 is much better than £449!!

£4 is definitely much better than £449 (and you need to eat), so I'd take that as a win 👍!

So now you haven't bought the watch, could the money be used for an OP instead 🤔? You'd be no worse off, as you had already mentally spent the money and it must have been coming from somewhere....

Finally earning interest instead of paying it!!!

@South_coast   The money was going to come out of savings but now it’s going to stay put!  The less I spend the quicker I’ll be able to get to my savings target and then I can start overpaying.  I almost bought a coat on sale that I don’t need this eve. Not sure why I’m feeling like I want to spend this week! 😬

Mortgage has gone out for this month and with a few £ scraped into Deep savings my balances are now:

    Deep savings: £15005.27
    mortgage: £156,704.08

The downside of having tightened up my budget is that I’ve already found a fatal flaw. My son needed a new phone and there was nothing spare in the budget 😫.  So  I’ve taken it from the home/car pot but I need a pot for his stuff going forward.

    A few rambling thoughts today….

Well, I did buy that coat on sale after all.  Bloody targeted ads!   I spotted yesterday that it was reduced to half price so I couldn't
hold myself back. Hubby being the enabler he is was like “well you’d better snap that up before they sell out” 🙄

We are counting it as my Christmas pressie as there was nothing I wanted or needed so I only
got one little thing for Christmas. We decided some years ago that we wouldn’t buy random stuff for gifts anymore as our house is full of stuff as it is.

Holidays have now been booked for all this year 🎉.  As I generally do flights and accommodation separately it means I have to pay upfront for a lot of it so a fair chunk has already been paid for, and have a spreadsheet of when the other bits are due and it’s easily manageable. It’s nice to have some things to look forward to and we have some lovely things planned.

I’m continuing to keepa tight rein on the account that we use for monthly spending outside our bills. I’ve never really tracked that so I’m using an app to keep tabs on what is spent and categorising it. I’ve been using it a couple of months now and tracking it seems have to reduced spends. It also helps me
make sure that anything we do spend is coming out of the correct accounts/pots etc.

January blues is in full swing and I know that’s when I’m tempted to spend - to create a little bit of brightness.
