A close relative who has been vulnerable in the past, has met up and gone out for a few dates with someone, we'll call Alex. Relative told me that Alex had a driving ban and I queried why. I was then told the following story read out from a text that they had sent.
Alex was a passenger in the car of someone he knew. Driver mentioned having a joint on them (presumably for personal use) . The car was then pulled over by the police and the driver was discovered to have more drugs on them than just this cannabis joint. Driver was sent down for 4 years. Alex received a driving ban due to this. To me this isn't ringing true though I've tried googling Alex's name and nothing comes up. Can you really receive a driving ban for being a passenger in a car when the above events take place?

No you can not receive a driving ban for being a passenger. If he genuinely has a ban he must have been the driver5

I'm afraid that's a made up story.
Things that are differerent: draw & drawer, brought & bought, loose & lose, dose & does, payed & paid5 -
Thank you both. You've confirmed my suspicions, either Alex has told the false story or relative has switched round Driver and passenger when reading out the text to me,(I was driving at the time so didn't see it) because relative knew I wouldn't approve. I wasn't enthusiastic about Alex having a driving ban in the first place.1

Alex sounds like a catch!!!!
How's it going, AKA, Nutwatch? - 12 month spends to date = 2.60% of current retirement "pot" (as at end May 2025)3 -
Alex wouldn't have a driving ban for being the passenger.2

What would be the situation if Alex had a full license but the driver had no license/insurance ?Never pay on an estimated bill. Always read and understand your bill0

Search for his name on Facebook?1

As a former police officer there actually is a situation in which a passenger can get a driving ban.
It would relate to being "drunk in charge of a vehicle" in the situation where the driver was over the limit for driving and the passenger held a full licence and was therefore supervising the "learner" driver and under law the passenger is technically in charge of the vehicle.
I actually was the arresting officer for this situation many years back and the girlfriend of the drunk driver who was a supervising passenger received a ban as well as the driver themselves (both incidentally were over the limit) .
Not drug related but it can happen. Of course if the driver had been incapable through drugs and the passenger was technically supervising then the same situation would apply as the offence is to be "in charge of a vehicle whilst unfit through drink or drugs".10 -
