Crosscheck £1600 quote external house wall painting please

£1600 quoted.  Self to supply paint.  Also self to touch up a few bits of render prior to job starting.

Detatched converted bungalow (one story with 2 gables for loft extension), with plenty of access on all 4 sides.  South coast but not an expensive area.

The job:
Three sides brick with pebbledash applied from one metre upwards - brick does not require painting.
ie. 1.75m vertical of pebbledash below eves requires painting on 3 sides, totalling 37Mx1.75). Accessable from ground or low stepladder.

above 2 sides for about 8m, the pebbledash continues to top of 2 gables.
ie. 2 triangles with tops chopped of about 8m wide and 2.5 high on second story (scaffold tower or long ladder).  These are the only 2 "tricky" sections if i DIY.

Finally we have about 16m x 2.5m of single story breezeblock garage walls (much easier to paint)

my wife organised the quote via a friend, and I've not sought competive quote yet.  I suspect she's expecting me to say "that's too much - I'll do it myself!", i can easily borrow a scaffolding tower with leg supports.  I just don't have very much time.

So is that too much?
I think it's for two coats.
I can't quite get my head around how many hours it would take a competent painter to paint that area, including the tricky bits.
TBH I'm more interested on thoughts about how much time it would take than the cost - i can work backwards from time at my local rate.
Also for how long it might take an amature like me!

Thanks for any insights.

Based on the time it takes me to paint my bungalow, I would estimate around 4 or 5 days work in total. Two coats on the 37x1.75 is about a day and a half, maybe two at a push. The fiddly bits a day and the garage about a day.

Pebbledash is a bit of a pain to paint, and does take longer, but not massively so

I am guessing they are charging a day rate of about £300 which is fairly typical for painters in my area

I just paid nearly £3000 for a large 3 bed bungalow and attached double garage. Paint included, 2 coats. Took two of them about 4 days I think.
  • Thanks all,
I’m reasonably sure the painter is semi-pro. And £25/hr would probably be what he’s thinking of round here.
I’m leaning towards DIY, or just maybe get him to do the high bits.

You could do it yourself easily enough over a few weekends really. I find with the pebbledash the easiest way to paint it is with a very shaggy roller with plenty of paint on it as it gets into all the bumps easier, then use a large brush to spread it around for any bits you miss.

When my neighbour, a very conscientious builder, painted his own house, he mixed a pale coloured pigment into the first coat. He said that made it easy to spot bits that he had missed. HTH.
No reliance should be placed on the above! Absolutely none, do you hear?

Airless sprayer (£1600-2000£) or hire one for the weekend,
Mask up everthing 1/2 day.  +£50 in materials)
Buy Properla heat retaining nano paint (112£ 15 ltrs self cleaning.
    2 men at £170 a day £340.
    transport to and from.
Profit, + tax, + wear and tear, plus van insurance, plus road tax, +NI and pensions for the guys
    and it all adds up.

If Britsh gas did painting houses, it would be £3000 lool

  • it’s coming in at about 45 hours of DIY (plus all the paint etc).  It’s taken a while to fit it in though!
