    Some people are being pedantic re board and lodging most people shorten it to board and lodge so you calling it lodge is fine and is indicative that you are mking a regular contribution to household costs

    In that case, it makes no difference - they will see you transferring the cash by your bank or taking the cash out at the ATM. Either way it's an expense. 

    The only possible advantage (and I use that word loosely) would be with a bank transfer you can normally put some kind of reference which shows on your statement, so you could call it 'mum/rent' to save them asking what it's for.
