You mean including your overdraft? I don't think any of them include overdrafts anymore as there were complaints that it encourages overspending and using expensive borrowing.

Perhaps you need to be more specific: after a pending what?

Ah, okay, it's for a credit. It definitely shows the balance after pending for e.g., debit card spending.

My guess as to why they're treated differently is that in accounting one of the key principles is that you need to be quick to recognise potential expenditures but slow to recognise revenues i.e. only when you're certain. There's the danger that a cheque or other credit could bounce or be recalled so it won't want to give the impression of certainty before they've cleared*.

*In theory they could still be reversed after the usual clearing times but it's less likely and would only usually occur in certain circumstances.

The balance after pending will include debit card payments and direct debits, standing orders etc, although not credits. I believe this is so that you make sure the money has reached your account fully before spending, so you don’t go into arranged/unarranged overdraft.

I don't understand why people get so tetchy about pending payments either in or out.

As otheers have explained it is purely that - the money is not fully yours and cleared into your account for you to spend.

Previously it wouldn't have been shown and the first you'd know of it is when it had cleared into your account and you could use it as you so wish.

Surely this doesn't need a new thread, isn't it just a continuation of your existing one?

What are you actually worried about? I wonder why it's taking so long to clear; what is the origin of the deposit? Is it e.g., a foreign cheque?
