App that shows smart meter read - not usage history but actual meter reading in real time ??

I look after the energy bills for an elderley relative, they have SMETS1 meters and are with Octopus Energy.

Is there an app that shows the real time meter reading? I have Bright for my own gas/elec and although it has all sorts of data for comparison I can't see the actual real time meter read, same for the Octopus webiste and app.

Does anyone know of any iOS apps that will show the real time (or close to it) meter read?

Third-party DCC Users such as Hildebrand  (Bright) cannot access smart meter index readings. The only party that can access smart meter readings is the designated supplier. The readings shown on the IHD are the TOTAL of all 4 registers that have been used since the meter was first installed.

Thanks, there's no IHD either unfortunately - the meters were British gas and we switched to Octopus upon moving in (there was no IHD upon moving in either). Octopus said they're unable to supply an IHD for these older meters.

The readings shown on the IHD are the TOTAL of all 4 registers that have been used since the meter was first installed.

Sorry, not sure I follow what's meant by this? Please could you explain in simpler terms?

The apps can see the data reported via the DCC but they poll that once a day, no app can see usage in real time.

Thanks, I understood that part - it was the total of all 4 registers that I was unsure about

The registers can be used to record usage at different times, as an example E7 uses two, one for peak, one for off peak, others can be set up differently, export register etc.

Thank you, have just signed up to that - although looks like it's some kind of trial at present:

Update: the waitlist for an Octopus Home Mini is now tens of thousands of customers long.

With so many people in line already, we can't promise a particular timeframe for getting yours, though it should be some time in 2023

Sounds like this has similar functionality to the Bright app, which also shows 30 minute usage about 12 hours behind eg I can currently see usage in 30 min segments up to 01:00 this morning (it's now 1pm) but no actual meter read

The owl, it uses a clip on ct clamp on the cable. It's not an online device but would let her see it, And if you install a webcam pointed at it you could also see it, And also check in on her with 2 way intercom.

Ok. Each smart meter has 4 separate registers. Each register has 48 by 30 minute usage blocks. The smart meter comms hub acts like a mobile phone. It sits waiting for a call from the supplier or ANOTher registered user such as Bright. For those on a 30 minute usage,, when the supplier’s system makes a call the meters respond with an index reading/s and a daily XML file containing 30 minute usage data. Apps such as Bright just get the usage file.

I have had smart meters for 4 years. During this time I have been on single and dual rate tariffs. I am currently on a single register 3 period tariff billed against usage not index readings.

When I look at my IHD, it shows a electricity meter reading of 03182 but when I look at the tariff block menu on the actual meter it shows a R1 reading of 00486 and a R2 reading of 02696.

It gets even more complicated. When Octopus carries out a manual data pull to recover missing data, it is usually linked to an opening and closing index reading (my normal bills don’t show index readings).  The reading shown on the bill is that from the R2 register.

Why not just show all 4 registers and a total?
