I'm willing to consider home made solutions too, wax, oil, varnish, whatever you've found thats cheap and works would be much appreciated!

i prefer plain old wood stain. dont like wax nor varnish.Get some gorm.0

if they are pine , try staining with antique pine wood dye and then varnishing with dulux diamond varnish .0
