Remember these are current requirement which may change in future years.
The main thing I'm hoping at the moment is that the Tories get voted out and Labour make things a bit more reasonable. But I can't imagine it's going to be a high priority for them, even if they do get elected.

    4. The dependent children requirement applies to any children you want to bring here who aren't British/Irish.
Just on this one, the website says this:

You must prove you have extra money if you have children who:

    • are not British or Irish citizens
    • do not have pre-settled status
    • are not permanently settled in the UK

It's not entirely clear if these requirements are three ways that your child can be counted, or whether they are mutually exclusive categories. My (future) child would be a British citizen, but wouldn't be permanently settled in the UK at the time we apply. I assume that 'pre-settled' and 'permanently settled' are categories that can only apply to non-UK citizens?

Also a friend of mine who's done the same thing (but had over 60 grand saved up, so could do it much quicker), said that the Mrs can still come over on a tourist visa while you're doing your 6 months with an employer. Does anyone know anything about that?

Any future child you had would be a British citizen and not subject to any immigration controls and wouldn't count towards any earning requirements.

You can in theory have your wife visit you while you are working in the UK but bear in mind a) if she has to apply for a tourist visa (rather than get a waiver) she may be denied it if they believe that there's a risk she wont return and that denial would have to be stated on your next application for a "permanent" visa too b) she can't apply for her "permanent" visa while she's in the UK on a tourist visa so she'd have to leave the country and go home again and then apply.

Given Labour's attitude towards immigration I don't expect them to be any laxer on such controls than the Tories anytime soon.

Yeah I know. They're still trying to appeal to all of the people who switched to Tory over Brexit. But the thing about Labour is that they're far more likely to back down on something that is challenged on human rights grounds. And I've always said that even if there's not much difference between the leaders (at least pre-Boris), there's still a difference between a centrist PM who has to please right wing backbenchers, and a centrist PM who has to please left wing backbenchers.

    Thanks for the response though.
