Utility Warehouse Discount - Is it worth it ?

Hi

I have several family members who are with Utility Warehouse getting multiple services provided. I’m trying to help them out by figuring out whether the discount offered for switching additional services over to them is worth it.

What prompted this was a recent letter informing of price rises with the statement below:

“from 1 April 2023 your annual discount of 5% will change to a flat rate of £25 a year compared to the Energy Price Guarantee, applied through your daily standing charge”

My take on this is that the 5% annual discount is being reduced to a fixed value I could currently compare to 1% of the EPG . Once the EPG is no more and energy prices fluctuate, the comparable percentage discount either falls below the 1% if prices rise ( as it’s fixed ) or increases above 1% if prices fall. Prices would have to fall to £500 a year to give the same percentage discount as before the change

Anybody any thoughts on this ? Have I misunderstood ?

The more services you have with Utility warehouse, the better energy tariff you can access. My family are all on the Double Gold tariff so I know the current tariff prices, but I can’t seem to find current information for the Gold or Standard tariff with Utility warehouse. I  know the monthly energy usage of my family and I would like to compare the discount between tariffs myself.

Does anyone know if information for the different tariffs – Gold & Standard are available online ?

If I know the value of the discount, I can measure this against the cost and services provided by other providers.

Thanks to all who comment.

  • If you go to the top of the page and enter ‘Utility Warehouse’ where it says ‘search this forum’ you will find  webpages full of comments. Personally, I prefer to keep all my services separate.

Utility Warehouse itself says the average household which pays £2,500 a year saves £5 on standard, £25 on gold, and £50 on double gold. Doesn't seem worth it to me.

I believe the general consensus here has always been that because of the extra cost of the bundled services, that wipes out any savings made on energy in any event. If the amount of the discount on energy has now dropped, that presumably makes it an even worse deal.

As already said - a search on the board will find a lot of threads on UW. You will notice that it has been said in the past also that mostly when you find people who are very positive about UW that is because they are “partners” and so get the various kickbacks available for persuading people to join using their referral.

I'm happy with UW, and have no connections (no pun!). I have gas, elec' and landline with them.

I don't believe in keeping all my eggs in one basket. You may want a better broadband or insurance and you can do this by looking around.
Someone has to pay all the agents commision.

Customers might save those amounts on their energy costs but a likely to be paying £15/£50/£100 extra on the other services they take, compared to if they chose the services themselves from a comparison site.

  • Now that UW have switched to actual amounts rather than percentage savings I would put forward it's not worth the extra paid for the secondary and tertiary services to get the discounts.

You can earn £50 just switching.

Being happy doesn't necessarily mean it's the best deal price wise. I'm with different suppliers for each utility and no one supplier has the best option for all of them so being able to pick and mix works best for me. I understand that simplicity of only having one supplier would appeal to others though.
