BT outstanding payment on my credit file - They won't let me pay it off!

Hi All,
I have had a BT outstanding payment on my account that I noticed about 4 years ago now when I was starting to get my credit file in order, for (Bt consumer - £182), I have called and written to BT on numerous occasions over these 4 years, Apparently my Name, Address and DoB do not match their records of having any bill to pay. I have raised disputes with Equifax, Experian, and Transunion. Equifax has removed it as they deemed that the letter was good enough proof. Experian and Transunion however have looked into the matter and said it is a legitimate debt but won't give me any further details.
I really do not know how to pay this off now and it's actually affecting my getting a mortgage as it's coming up a default every month. Who can I turn to next? I just want to pay the bill.
I can only think that it was possible for BT Sports but any BT Sports accounts I have previously held I am unable to login to and I provided these accounts in the letters to BT but they still need to confirm I am the owner of the account before I can pay it. So I do not know if it is any of these as they won't tell me.
Thanks for any help.

Hi, this is really strange.
I'm a BT customer and what I'd do now is phone them and stay on the phone with them until they sort it out. They've had long enough to do it and have failed miserably.
Be like a dog with a bone. Don't give up until they have promised to sort this out. It's disgraceful.
If the person you speak to isn't very helpful (advisers don't seem to have much authority), ask to speak to their superior, or some other manager who is able to help, since this matter has been dragging on for years and it's affecting your finances adversely.
Don't be fobbed off and don't give up. It's a free phone call 0800 800 150, so all you need to make sure that you have plenty of is time.
And you could also ask for compensation for all the anxiety, misery and time-wasting their error has caused.
I did that a couple of months ago when they'd messed me about. The person I spoke to asked how much I wanted and I said £60. (Well, they did ask.) I was told that £15 was the usual amount for situations such as mine. I said that was pitiful and everyone should be entitled to more, just for the inconvenience caused. I ended up with £30 - which was fine.
If BT have no record of you having any bill to pay then they need to advise ALL the credit reference agencies, not just Equifax - and you need to get their assurance that that is what they will do. Ask them to note everything on your file - especially the point that you will be phoning every day to check that is what they've done. Make a big nuisance of yourself.
You could even write a letter of complaint to BT. This is their address for complaints -
Customer Service Manager, BT plc, PO Box 334, Sheffield S98 1BT.
More information on their webpage in the following link -

I hope that some of this information is helpful. Obviously, it's only what I'd do, of course. But it's worth trying to make them sit up and take notice because, as you say, it's affecting your ability to get a mortgage.
Good luck with everything. Please note - taken from the Forum Rules and amended for my own personal use (with thanks) : It is up to you to investigate, check, double-check and check yet again before you make any decisions or take any action based on any information you glean from any of my posts.
