Cosy Octopus tariff

I have been on this innovative tariff for a month now and found it great for my house heated with a heat pump, as well as my life style as a retired but active person. I set my thermostat to 21C for 5AM and wake up to a 'cosy' home, then down to 19 C at 9. Start cooking at 1PM, with thermostat up again. Thermostat down to 16C for the expensive period from 4 PM and then light my log burner if I plan to stay in, otherwise just keep it set low. I estimate I saved about £30 during March compared to February.
Even if you start cooking during the expensive period, it probably makes sense, as long as you can time your heat pump to work hard during the cheap hours.

I take it you can be at home and not out for work like the traditional 9-5?

It will work well for retired, working from home people who can shift their electric use and  cooking to the two cheaper periods.

In all but name it's economy 7 during the day with agile sprinkled in to avoid 4-8pm

I realise Cody Octopus is designed for those with heat pumps but is it possible to get on it without having one?

‘To be eligible for Cosy, you should have a heat pump (air, or ground source) at a property we supply. We may ask you to provide the MCS certificate for your heat pump installation to confirm this.’

Thanks for speedy reply Dolor. It could work for load shifters who don’t have heat pumps. I would be interested to know if anyone without a heat pump was allowed to get on it.

Octopus has been checking MCS Certificates for its Flux Tariff.

If you are able to sign up without a heat pump, then you could be to switched to Flexible:

The Terms and Conditions are, for Cosy Octopus:

    1. Cosy Octopus is designed for customers who have a heat pump (air, or ground source) installed and operational at the property which we supply. We may ask you to provide your MCS installation certification to confirm this.
    2. If you sign up to our Cosy Octopus tariff but do not meet this eligibility criteria, we can place you on an alternative tariff that we consider is more appropriate for your circumstances. We will let you know if we do this and advise you of the rates and terms that apply to the alternative tariff.

In the absence of MCS a photo and serial number will do.
  • Come July the 6 hour cheap rate is likely to be around 17p kWh.

I think unless your usage is heavily weighted to the peak evening period this tariff is decent, possibly a loss leader hence the restrictions.

6 hours of cheap energy in trade for 3 hours of expensive energy.

without being too flippant, what other photo or serial number would you suggest?, a piccy of your cat, dog or children is unlikely to do it, neither is the serial number of your washing machine or telly  :/
