Face book messenger not working.

Hi could someone help a non techie out please.
The problem, for reasons I don’t understand, messenger is not working for me.
When I send a message, I get the word ‘sent’ and then it just becomes a greyed-out tick and the message is not arriving.
It was fine up to a week ago. Any simple things I can do to correct this please.
I choose the rooms that I live in with care,
The windows are small and the walls almost bare,
There's only one bed and there's only one prayer;
I listen all night for your step on the stair.
