Cancelling Car Insurance

Yesterday, we sold our car.
I went online to cancel the car insurance and a question popped up - do you plan to replace the vehicle within 21 days?
Although we don't have a replacement vehicle arranged, we do plan to get a new car and it may well be this month if we can find something suitable for the correct price.  I responded "yes".
The next pop up said that the insurer would keep the policy active and, checking this morning, it still shows our car attached to the policy.  I was thinking it might have changed to an active policy, but shown something like "awaiting vehicle details".
I have heard horror stories of people who did not cancel the policy but then ended up in trouble because there was a claim and the insurer still carried RTA liability which they try to recover from the policyholder.
There was no acknowledgement back from the insurer that I had cancelled / suspended the policy.
Am I OK, or do I need to cancel the policy again and just respond "no" when receiving the questions about getting a new car?

    I phoned the call centre as they are open now and they advised the car still shows, but it will be noted that I advised that I do not own the vehicle and there is no liability - hope that is all OK and correct.

    Who is the insurer? Make sure you get it in writing that they accept you dont own the vehicle anymore and therefore there is no liability and the vehicle is no longer insured.

    I did ask for that but the call-centre said nothing was available.  I was just told it would automatically note on their system.  I have the time and date of the call, which was probably recorded (?)
    I went back to the online cancellation and took a screen-shot, but that has nothing to show it was my policy.
