Just moved into a property and don’t have a clue on how my boiler system works.  Everything was switched off when I moved. In the airing cupboard is two switches, I have switched the bottom one on hoping this is not the immersion switch. My cylinder is a Boilermate II. Grateful if someone can advise on the switches

Standard set up for electric water heating with E7

The bottom switch should be ON which it is to heat up the whole tank during nigh- t hours ; top switch usually OFF which it is -  to be used only as a booster.

Assume no gas - if you have, switch both off and use the gas boiler

@Robin9 I could be wrong, but I don't think it is a standard E7 setup.

The Boilermate II appears to be a thermal heat store with an integrated hot water and central heating controller and pump.
The control system on the Boilermate should be directing the external boiler

    Installation manual here : https://www.unventedcomponentseurope.com/data-sheets/gledhill-boilermate-ii-2-manual.pdf

So the bottom switch should be the 3 amp power supply for the control system.

But as you say, the top switch should be for an immersion heater which should be left off unless a hot water boost is needed or if the main boiler is not in use.

User manual is here, although there is no real detail on how to set the rotary central heating timer on the unit : https://gledhill-response.net/wp-content/uploads/2021/03/BoilerMate_II_User-1.pdf

The rotary clock has 3 settings, on timed off. It's that small sliding button at about 3 o'clock on the timer dial.
    That's for your heating.
    Hot water is on demand.
Your boiler needs to be at max setting to run efficiently
