Hi, we moved in to a small 2 bed, semi - detached bungalow (550sq.ft) last year (with an electric boiler as theres no gas where we live) and this winter the bills have been ridiculous:

December 2022
Day: 1461.0 kwh
Night: 806.0 kWh
£ 733.58

January 2023
Day: 1525.2 kwh
Night: 839.2 kWh
£ 906.39

February 2023
Day: 1047.0 kwh
Night: 521.6 kWh kWh
£ 558.26

March 2023
Day: 1700.0 kwh
Night: 648.4 kWh kWh kWh
£ £843.35

Its completely unaffordable, we have a 3 month old baby so have had to have the heating on over Winter.
In March we had the heating on less than 2 hours a day, does this seem like the usage is correct?

I have contacted or energy supplier to see if the meter is "creeping" and are waiting for a date for an engineer. but if it is correct we will get an £80 call out charge :(

If the meter is correct what is the best solution for next Winter? would oil be cheaper? or as we have a chimney would could get a wood burner? im really not sure whats best to do as i have only ever lived in houses with Gas?

Thank you
Dave

Can you be a bit more specific about the "boiler" please ?    Is this a great big tank feeding a conventional wet radiator system (like you would get with  a wall mounted gas boiler)

Make and model would help if you can.

    Are these all ACTUAL consumptions.

What temperature was the heating set to? And was it on 24/7?

  • First things first are you able to provide any more detail about the heating/hot water systems? An “electric boiler” is a term that might mean something different to different people depending on how in depth their understanding of water heating systems are so it would help to clarify what equipment you’ve got in place for accurate advice.

Additionally, do you know how this appliance is controlled? Is it something that’s always active, is there any kind of timing device you’re aware of, or perhaps it might be fed from a different consumer unit/fusebox than your other appliances? If you’re not sure and know the properties rough age this might also help narrow down the most likely installed system.

You’re on a dual rate tariff as you have day/night readings, so you want to make sure this boiler is only active on the night time rates as far as possible (and if it must be on during the day for any reason it’ll likely be a good idea to look at the possibility of switching to a single rate).
    Moo…

Hi sorry for not being more specific, I know its a Fiamma,
    the model:EK.C Electric Combi Boiler
(the manual has 3 different versions and i'm not sure which one we have) 12kw, 18kw and 24kw i'm guessing its 24kw as thats the only one sold on electricboilers.com which is stuck on the front of the boiler

Sorry theres no product code or anything on the actual boiler i hope thats helpful?

Its powering 5 radiators in total and supplies the hot water for the kitchen sink and bathroom, no water tank (the shower is electric)

They are the actual meter readings that we have taken

    Thank you
    Dave

What are your day and night rate costs?  I fear a dual tariff is the worst option for wet electric central heating.

Do you own the bungalow or rent it?

We have a Hive Mini controlling the system so it clicks on and off, on the app in march it was on between 1 - 2 hours a day in total.

The bungalow is around 25 years old and has fiber glass loft insulation on the plasterboard.

    I hope that helps too?
    Thanks

Hi, Its set to 40 and only on for a couple of hours a day most in March. It was on quite alot in January with having the new born and it being colder, that was more like 5-8 hours a day.
