I don't remember a time when they had a different message. Their core target audience is people who might be nervous about the state of the world (there's always big stuff to worry about) and buy into their 'unique insights' to investment with them. A broken clock is right twice a day - they will have several examples over the years of where their active management made the right call. Such sirens are alluring.

Been tempted by Ruffer a few times, but the fees for one put me off! (there are other reasons too)

Only ruffer would be 80% cash when the FTSE went up 20%
But diversification is good and they contrast the rose tinted optimism of Goldman Sachs and others.

I dumped Ruffer as one of my more capital preservation parts of the portfolio a couple of years ago because disappointed with the relative performance to the others. It then jumped a little in the tables because of a successful gamble on bitcoin. My idea of a capital preservation strategy does not include wild gambles on bitcoin, even if they did come off, that is the remit of the growth funds at the more risky end of the portfolio, and even there I don't think any of them are gambling significant amounts on bubbles like bitcoin..3
