Single rate electricity meter with dual rate tariff

I recently moved to Tomato Energy as they offered a cheap night rate tariff and I had just had a solar battery installed. The plan was to charge the battery overnight during the cheap rate. I had been told that I would have to have a smart meter fitted but nothing happened. On asking Tomato, I was told that, until they fitted the smart meter (in a few months time) they would assume that 32% of my usage would be during the cheap night rate and this was an industry standard. Anyone else heard of this?

  • It's pretty standard for an Energy Retailer to estimate usage if it doesn't have the required info. I'd be pushing for a Smart Meter asap -- and remember that some Energy Retailers will pay you for exporting. No idea if Tomato do this.
  • Thanks, karlos3112. I have asked for a smart meter asap. They're not my panels (roof-rent arrangement) so no exporting opportunity
