Travel Insurance Questions

I have a couple of questions about travel insurance for a UK trip. I feel a bit daft asking as I think I should know!
I have an annual policy which expires in May and I am travelling in July. Am I covered for cancellation until the policy expires, or do I need overlapping policies?

Also, I was looking at one policy and it said it didn't cover for cancellation caused by pre-existing conditions of non travelling companions. This is exactly what I need to insure, as my dad is elderly with a number of health conditions. Can anyone advise me where I can get insurance which covers me in the case that he is unwell and I can't travel?
Many thanks!

The cancellation cover on your existing policy should be good until the policy expires.

That sounds standard to me. Are you sure your existing policy doesn't have an equivalent exclusion?

If your existing policy does provide cover in the event of your father being unable to travel I would renew that rather than trying to find an alternative, possibly cheaper, alternative.

You need to read your policy, there is a race to the bottom to make things as cheap as possible and as a consequence some policies are fairly useless.
