Marriage Tax Allowance - How long doe it take to come through?

My wife works part time, she is below the tax threshold. We did not know about the marriage tax allowance and so have applied and backdated last 4 years.

We received a letter saying my tax code has now changed, but nothing about the last 4 years. We did this over 3 months ago. Does anyone know how long this takes? Should we receive a cheque in the mail? Is there anything I could do to speed this up?

Many thanks for any advice.

I am employed so not done self assessment. Yes I have always paid tax in previous years. Thanks
  • In that case I would suggest you'll have to contact HMRC.l to find out what's happened to the previous tax years.

Normally you would get a refund, either by cheque or a bank transfer (you initiate this from your Personal Tax Account on receipt of a calcualtion from HMRC).

8am sharp is apparently the best time to phone.

If you applied online then you get a letter in your account saying what cheque payment you will receive, we got the cheque refund within four weeks and the current year was updated via next payroll, uc then took money back at end of the pay period, still trying to get a answer if uc will take money back against the back payment cheque, if your on uc be prepared for a repayment and adjustment to council tax support.

The current year comes back via your payroll when the tax code updates.

Although it's unlikely that the OP will have managed to get the full benefit of the 2022-23 allowance via a change of tax code if they only received a letter recently, and the change wasn't processed in time for the last payroll of the tax year.

If it's only just been sent out, the tax code change letter may be referring to 2023-24 ?

True but given figures mentioned it makes me think the most recent year might have caught most recent payroll or be on the way as my husbands change happened pretty quickly, as it uc getting wind of it and then taking the money back!
