As it’s not in a moisture environment I personally wouldn’t bother. And if it was I wouldn’t use mdf.
Indeed. If it were in the bathroom, I’d be using real wood!
  • I'm not sure a single coat of primer would do much to protect MDF if it was sitting in water. And nobody put several coats of finish paint on the bottom of skirting before installing it. If leaving the bottom of skirting unpainted is a problem, then it's an exceedingly common one!

Well, it’s not a bathroom or kitchen floor. We’ve got laminate flooring through the house, where all the new architraves are going. So not a great deal of mopping! Largely grooming (every day it seems! Picks up dust like nothing else!)  :)

A background in engineering? Not sure I follow?
Does prior research, understands the material he’s using, notices an issue with potential to affect the performance of the material in use, proposes action to mitigate.  Yes I’d have said engineer as well.  You’d need to be wearing a rock band t-shirt and be going for a few pints after, for full confirmation :)
