Hi, there's a lot of info in the following link, from Which -
https://www.which.co.uk/consumer-rights/advice/the-car-i-bought-has-a-problem-what-are-my-rights-aAnMC5b0ZzJb
You do have rights and if you know about them, then you are in a stronger position if the garage/dealer is reluctant to help you any further. The place you bought it from may have their own terms and conditions but they are over-ridden by the Consumer Rights Act 2015.
Did you use a credit card at all? For a deposit or anything?
I ask because a few years ago I bought a used car from my local mechanic's garage and trusted him as he'd already been fixing my own car for a couple of years. Paid for it by credit card and it turned out it was a pile of junk but when I tried to return it he didn't want to know. I ended up applying for a Section 75 via my credit card and eventually got my money back that way, plus some compensation plus a bouquet of flowers from the credit card company. (I was impressed).
But you haven't reached that point as yet and it seems that there's still room for some negotiation. Even when a car is old it has to be 'fit for purpose' and 'last a reasonable amount of time'.
When buying a used car, this is what the government recommends -

I hope some of that is helpful. Good luck with everything. Please note - taken from the Forum Rules and amended for my own personal use (with thanks) : It is up to you to investigate, check, double-check and check yet again before you make any decisions or take any action based on any information you glean from any of my posts. Although I do carry out careful research before posting and never intend to mislead or supply out-of-date or incorrect information, please do not rely 100% on what you are reading. Verify everything in order to protect yourself as you are responsible for any action you consequently take.0 -
Is the garage registered with the Motor Ombudsman https://www.themotorombudsman.org/?
If not, the case studies on their page are useful to see application of the Consumer Rights Act. Any fault in the first 6 months would be deemed to have been present at purchase. Not certain if they can or can't deduct for usage, but their estimation is nonsense, at that age the depreciation curve would be rather flat.0
