  • I visited Saranda and Butrint in 2005. I don't know about Tirana though.

I was there about three years ago. A weird and wonderful place! I'm sure you'll have a wonderful time.

There's a major hotel in the centre of Tirana. Either a Hilton, or an Intercontinental or something like that. That was the best (only?) place to change traveller's cheques and a good place to change currency.

US$ was the currency to have when I went, but the Euro was gaining ground and is probably the hard currency of choice by now.

Make sure you visit the bizzare Pyramid, and the the mosque on Skendenburg Square. Can't recommend any specific restaurants, but there are plenty of options.

Oh, and remember when struggling to communicate that a nod of the head means no, and a shake means yes! Caused no end of amusement when I was there (especially when you come across a local who wants to help the hapless tourist by doing everything the 'normal' way round).
  • Thanks for that advice (I must admit I was not expecting any replies). I am staying at the hotel you mentioned, I think. I will definitely visit the Pyramid

  • I wouldn`t recommend going to Albania in the winter though. Too cold :)
If you went during the summer the best thing to do is to find an agency which normaly are very cheap and they offer tours around Albania. The Riviera on the South of Albania is fantastic, and the hotels are at cheap at very low prices.

The main currency that is used is Euro, (Lek), USD.

If you like snow, I recommend the North. You`ll think you`re in a movie.

Albanians are very friendly with foreign tourists and many can communicate in English. If you stay in Tirana. I recommend you go to the Petrela Castle, You`ll be left with out words...

    Enjoy :)
