Public emergency alerts to be sent to all UK smartphones on 23rd April

Family members are travelling home from Paris later today. I’ve heard that phones which are turned off will receive the alert when they’re turned back on so I’m curious as to whether the phones of anyone travelling on Eurostar will go off once they emerge from the tunnel… 🤷🏻‍♀️

Good point, I guess that's one reason why we have tests. I've got six mobiles lined up on the sofa ready to go too.

I'll bite - six mobiles?  

Me/partner's regular mobiles
my hot backup mobile
partner's previous (rubbish) Oppo mobile
my previous mobile that normally lives in the car
a Moto G7 that's used as a media streamer/emergency phone

I'll let you off - we have one each, my work phone and then three additional phones I dust every week on OH's dresser because he's still deciding what to do with them.

If you have multiple mobiles you know will work IOS 14.5+ Android 11+

take the sim out of one and see if it alerts

Turn a couple off and put one on 5 minutes and another on half an hour after the test to see if it alerts- is the message buffered,

does it remain active for a few minutes or is it one-shot?

Take one out to the car and connect to the infotainment system to see what the infotainment does .

Put one on aeroplane mode

I want them to run a test every week for a month now so I can try them all out, I think only one of the phones in the house will actually work.

Seemed fairly easy to me, it will be somewhere in a notification menu, I posted how to do it in android whatever-number-I-have.

I left them on, I can't really see why you wouldn't want warning of an Impending Disaster, like a dam breach, meteorite impact, nuclear strike, visit by local MP etc.

They won't use it to tell you that a local MP is visiting - that's not an emergency under the criteria.

What's to stop the mobile networks getting permission to push advertising via this system in the future?

A visit by my MP would be a disaster! I would certainly want to be warned so I could stay at home

Well, that well that was an anticlimax, And mine went off at 2.59.

Well it's just happened. Came in via my ears as my phone is connected to aids. not too loud(but you couldn't miss it) and clicking ok turned it off.  Much ado about nothing.

75% of the phones in the house didn't work.

No real surprise now I found out you need 4g and at least Androd 11 or IOS 14.5.

So we have to buy new phones in case HMG want to warn us of a disaster......
