When you move into a new property you are with the current supplier of the property. you have no choice in that.  You need to set up an account with BG, if they are the current supplier, then you can move to the supplier of your choice.  Your details were likely given by the previous occupant / landlord / agent of the property.
  • I presume this is rented accommodation, rather than a property you own? My best guess is that the landlord/housing provider would have provided your details to British Gas to inform them you're moving in, most likely so that there is a clearly defined point in time where the liability for the bill changes from them to yourself.

You will have gone onto a deemed tariff from completion, and by the looks of it, with British Gas, as it appears they were probably the supplier to the previous occupants.
Not quite sure how they got your name, unless the previous occupants gave it them

As part of closing their energy account, the previous occupier is asked by the supplier for the name of the new occupier. That is how they have your name but no other details.

More likely to be a change of owner, as vendor would know purchaser’s name.
In let property, tenant is usually responsible for utilities & old tenant wouldn’t know new tenant’s name.
