Hi

does anyone know of or have successfully used an excel spreadsheet to show historic electricity usage over a period of time?

Something I can input meter readings from bills to compare, say a three month period over previous years?

Thanks in advance

I record my meter readings every day on a spreadsheet so I can check relative figures.  I don't compare the amounts I have been charged just my actual use figures but obviously I could input bill amounts, standing charges etc in other cells.

Things that are differerent: draw & drawer, brought & bought, loose & lose, dose & does, payed & paid

I have always kept an eye on my usage and on my bills and since the price hikes I record meter readings most days into a spreadsheet I set up in Excel.  With the s/c and units rates recorded (& updated as necessary, like today) everytime I change the reading cell it updates all the necessary calculations to give the total I should expect for my bill.  EDF bill me monthly (I pay variable DD) on my submitted readings and after 5 months with them we always agree to within a few pence either way (due to rounding).  Never had a nasty surprise!  As I pass my meters on the way to the freezer in the garage most days it is not onerous to note the readings and add to the spreadsheet whenever I am on my PC.  Certainly takes less time than I would have to spend trying to figure out if the bill is correct when it arrived & has given me a great running picture of my usage pattern through the cold weather and as I have been trying to economise.

I created a spreadsheet in 2013 to keep track of my bills. I read my meters every week and on the first of the month which is my billing date. The sheet contains unit rates, standing charges etc. Each month the bills and my spreadsheet are within a few pence difference.

Years ago I did use a degree days web site to take account of external temperature but in the end I never did anything with the data. If ever I have the time and inclination I would like to do a graph of usage over the years but not sure what use this would be as usage depends on the weather.

What is horrifying is the difference in unit rates and standing charges in the last 10 years.
  • Hi,
    maybe THIS would help.

I created a Google Sheet, which includes this dashboard and lots of stats based on meter readings taken as often as you wish.

If enough people were interested, I could make a public version that you could copy and use for yourselves.

I created my own spreadsheets & on checking the oldest I have on my laptop they date back to 2006.
I update it everytime I send a meter reading and/or the tariff changes (which has been a lot lately as we all know).
As others have said, I'm always within a penny at most due to rounding. That is - when I actually get bills as my current Electricity provider hasn't issued me one yet since I was moved to them in Oct 2021 lol ;p
But at least I know how much I SHOULD owe them ;o)

I am a user of Meter Readings and Energy Tracker..  Meter Readings is very good and I like the simplicity of data entry - especially for E7 meters, however you need to pay to download (no free tier) and you also need to pay for a "power user" addon in order to handle supplier rate changes. Energy Tracker has a lot of functionality but the free tier cannot handle fully handle E7 meters (basically you need 2 meters and virtual meter) and so you need to purchase an addon to handle this.
However I can recommend Energy Control, which is free and can handle E7 meters ( Unlike Meter Readings you need to define 2 meters and a virtual meter that adds them together) and supplier rate changes. It offers the unique feature of providing suggested values for future meter readings based on historic entries. It does not offer the data entry simplicity of Meter Readings or the reporting capability of either Meter Readings or Energy Tracker but I find it  meets my needs and I tend to use it the most. I'm not sure whether these are available on Android.
