I’m about to pay a deposit for an expensive school trip for my child.
I understand the school will have insurance for the trip (I will check). But will this cover not being able to go because of medical reasons before the trip?

You need to check that out with the school on the terms and conditions of the group policy.

Check with the school but I doubt it.0

In my experience it does cover cancellation due to medial issues. The only problem might be an undisclosed pre-existing condition, which would of course not be covered by standard travel insurance. So if your child does have such a condition, you'd need to inform the school AND insist on confirmation that they have informed the travel company the school has booked with.0
