Luggage GPS tracker

Has anyone used an international CPS tracker in their bag, in case it is lost or stolen, why flying?

I don't use Apple.

Any recommendations?

Thank you

I’ve looked into this and it seems as though all work on a Bluetooth connection (except Apple which works on pinging between IPhones to gather info) which means you have to be within a  close proximity to the tracker. Not for me.
The common law of business balance prohibits paying a little and getting a lot. If you deal with the lowest bidder, it is well to add something for the risk you run, and if you do that you will have enough to pay for something better.
  • I heard that Google will launch some tags similar to the Apple ones this year. Might not be in time for you though.

The problem with GPS ones is that they need a SIM card to report their location back to you. If you are traveling internationally then you need an international SIM. Not cheap.

These devices tend to work by communicating with all nearby mobile devices with the same software running.

AirTag has been so successful because every iPhone has the relevant software and when you are in the US, Western Europe etc iPhones are the single most common brand of phone. Its also free of charge once you buy the tag.

There are other options out there, Tile was increasingly common until AirTag came into being, which work with iOS and Android but the issue is that only a tiny percentage of phones are walking around with the software installed and running. Plus as the owner of the tag, you need to be paying a monthly fee (those unintentionally trying to help find your device doesn't need to be paying).

Mrs lost her keys 3 times with Tile and only once was it located. She has lost them twice since switching to AirTag and they've been found both times. Not big enough numbers to be statistically relevant but its not surprising.
