Shoes bust in 1 month?

So I bought a pair of Sketchers for work from sports direct, £70 so quite expensive but I thought I’ll be wearing them everyday no point buying cheap £20 shoes that’ll be done in 6 months.

1 month later the sides bust in them with a hole.  I emailed sports direct with photos no reply.

Any ideas on what to do next? Am I being unreasonable? I don’t normally complain but figure they were expensive and should get more than 1 month out of them.

  • Sketchers aren't workwear standard though, they're a leisure shoe, and you'll probably be declined on this issue.

Many shoe companies, in their refund small print, will show this to be a specific stipulation - i've seen it often.

You may get a goodwill gesture but probably not much more.

Probably correct but then the only real work wear shoes are steel toe cap safety type footwear which are generally overkill for most people.

    What is workwear standard?
Does that mean you can't wear your shoes every day?
Of course, they're not going to be rugged, suitable for a building site, working in a warehouse, or suchlike, but the OP doesn't say what type of job they have; if they go to an office and sit at a desk, then their expectation would be reasonable.

I have pairs of Sketchers and wear them all the time.  If I pay best part of a hundred quid for a pair of shoes I don't expect them to have to be kept in a glass case and admired.  However, if the side has bust after a month I would suggest that the shoe was too narrow and pressure from the foot has caused the failure.

Photo of the damage is always useful

What is "work"? 8 hours sat a desk? 15 hours running around a workshop?

Your generally better having two pairs and wearing every other day to get more than double the life out of them but 1 month in most circumstances would be too short. That said, a long time ago I noticed that most my shoes had the same area of damage which I thought was odd. Looking under by desk at work I found a screwhead sticking out and just how I happened to sit I was constantly rubbing my shoes against the edge of it. I suspect if I didnt use more than one pair it probably would have gone through the leather.

I wear a lot of Sketchers, one of my pairs has done a couple of years and even walked on beaches, wandered up mountains, been round Europe and finally wore a hole through side after 2 years.

If yours had only casual use then I would get onto SD again, although their reputation is appalling on customer service.

You really need to say exactly the use they get..
Sat under a desk, it is possible that you are rubbing against a leg & wearing the sides out.

In my experience of Sketchers & as a family we have worn a lot. A lot depends on just which type you buy, some are a lot better than others in the wear & lasting, than others.
Even wear some for walking dog & get months of use out of them in the dryer months. If it starts getting wet & muddy, forget it. Time to dig out some proper walking boots.

Take them back to store with the receipt? How did you pay for them?

I have a pair of Sketchers work shoes, with a steel (well, composite) toecap and all.

In fact they have a whole range, https://www.skechers.co.uk/men/shoes/work-safety/
