in Credit cards
I joined Amex last autumn and got 30000 for joining. Later on they gave me another 20000.
This month they took the 20000 off. They wrote to me explaining this was a mistake and it had happened to many.
I feel there is now no incentive for me to have this card. What have others in a similar position done?

Are you talking pounds sterling? If so, that's a very generous joining incentive! 😁0

You haven't given enough information both on the card you got, the sign up bonus you received and your reason for getting the card.At 30k sign up that could be the platinum or gold card. Which one was it if either of them? What was the advertised sign up bonus? The gold card give you ongoing bonuses during the year if you hit certain spend targets. If you had the gold card did you meet these spend targets? Finally why did you get the card? The rewards pointsIf the card allowed, airport lounge entry? The offers you get on the card?Other reasons?Only you can make the decision wether it is worth it, based on your interests and priorities. But if you want others' opinions on your situation, you need to give more information.0

I am in the same situation as you. I'd transferred the extra 20K points away already. I will keep my card (Rewards Gold) for a few more months and put some of my day-to-day spend on it, paying back in full every month, but then I will make sure to cancel before Year 2 starts and the fees are due.
I'll still use the Deliveroo discount if nothing else, and my other cards don't really offer any perks either so a Rewards-less Amex is comparable. That's what my plan is anyway
Edited to add - if they actually took the 20K points off you before you could use them, you have my sympathy. I suspected it was a mistake so transferred them away relatively early on, although they were sat there for a week or so at least. I'd actually given Amex a call even WHILE the second bonus countdown was active, asking if it was genuine, and never got a proper response and the points were eventually paid out automatically so...
ETA2 - my points balance is now at about -19,000 as a result of this1 -
Its a gold card. The initial bonus was 30,000 amex points if spent over set amount in first 3 moths which i did. Thought id met some other target for 20,000 more.
Transferred and spent.
Don't use Deliveroo and unlikely to use airport longes so while my points balance is -19k thinking i should leave.
Thanks for replies.0 -
I knew the gold card offered 2500 points for every £5k spent on top of the initial bonus. But that is to a maximum of 12500 points in a given card year. I think. If you are using the points, then I am guessing the points are of some value to you.You have already received the points, transferred them out and used them. By the time Amex reclaimed the points, there was a zero balance, so them deducting the mistaken points left you with -18k.Psychologically I can see it is a hill to climb in that any points you earn by spending, is just reducing your deficit and not increasing in value. But to be fair you have already received the (unearned) points and moved them out of the account.Up to you of course. Many people leave after getting a points injection. If you haven't found it, suggest you read the website Head for Points. There are many points collectors on that site for all the different airline and hotel schemes.Edited to add: on the HfP site, there are articles and card reviews which you may find useful. Also there are forums. There is a daily chat forum where anything (usually travel/points related is discussed). There are also forums for specific subjects. There is an Amex forum. You may find the answer you are looking for there, or you are of course free to ask your own question.HTH1

I'd leave in your situation, to be totally honest. Amex will write off the rest of the points, so I'd see any points earned as stuff which could have earned elsewhere.

Isn't there a possibility of going on the chat or call them, explaining the 20000 points situation to them and saying you want to leave, then they might write them off and reset you to zero?0

Maybe if you went for a complaint instead.Ultimately it sounds to me like the OP has simply realised the card isn't right for their needs tho, and since it caries a fee it would seem sensible to me to close it down (and restart the 2 year counter on getting another Amex bonus, other than BAPP).0

Hi, if I have stayed in UK for less than 3 years, am I eligible to apply for Amex UK Platinum Cashback Everyday Credit Card?0
