If you use a credit card to pay for a Wi-Fi rental abroad, and as part of the rental contract there is a late return fee, can the merchant charge your credit card automatically or do they need to request the payment from you?

I think this depends on the contract, but, IMO, most likely, they can.

Would be via continuous payment authority.Life in the slow lane0 -
Do the T&Cs state they can charge your card for the late return fee or anything they say you owe? There is this myth that once a retailer has your card details they can charge it whatever they want whenever they want, but unless they have your authorisation to they can't (even if you owe it). That could be an explicit authorisation or something in the T&Cs saying they can charge your card for extras like late return fees.0
